Thirty six years ago John Mackey started a grocery store based on his vision of a business that provides customers only natural foods. Based on a simple but effective business model, Whole Foods has grown to a position of market leadership that is now being challenged by low-cost organic sellers. According to Feldman (as cited in Giammona, 2015) ââ¬Å"Whole Foods continues to face challenges from competitors going after organic and natural foods more aggressivelyâ⬠(para. 4). The company s differentiation edge against lower-cost competitors is fading as competitors have been successfully emulating the Whole Foods experience (Sharma,2015).Furthermore, Wahba (2016) noted that the company s Whole Paycheck reputation is hurting sales and driving customers away to other low-priced organic food competitors. Whole Foods needs to reduce prices due to the new competitive landscape. Since the grocery industry runs on very low profit margins, in order to reduce prices the company needs to reduce costs. Whole Foods can leverage its size along with the company s value proposition of working with local farmers to develop more efficient collaborative networks.
